THE GREEN ANTS ENJOY CHOCOLATE...

Posted On: 2003/01/20 - 02:03

Hello all.

Just wanted to let you know that we've had to remove a few recipes at the request of the author who's book they appear in. Of course the problem with pulling recipes straight from alt.food.vegan is that we're not always sure where they're originally from! We rely on others informing us and requests from creators to credit/remove them.

The majority of recipes we just removed were for cheese replacements, so we'd love it if people out there with their own special recipes would send them in! And of course, you'll be fully credited... ;o)

Being a vegan meant being STINGY and keeping recipes ALL FOR THEMSELVES. Of course, I WILL NOT buy any books that contain vegan cheese recipes, in the hopes that I will hurt the evil soul's pocket who did this awful thing. Thanks a lot, jerkibus.

It was probably Joanne Stepaniak who wouldn't allow her recipes to be posted. She has a policy of not allowing them to be posted on the internet. So if you're avoiding cookbooks, avoid hers. Bryanna Clark Grogan, on the other hand, has some recipes for cheese replacements, and she very generously shares them on the internet. And they're great! She's one author whom I can recommend as being a great cook as well as a nice person.

you're exactly right, on both authors! it was joanne who requested the removal of the recipes (with quite a threatening email too). and bryanna clark grogan let me know about which of her recipes hadn't been credited, and was quite happy to have them remain with her name. ah, the joys of militant copyright! how silly.

Give Joanne a break-- she has the "Uncheese Cookbook"- of course she doesn't want her recipes posted! What are the recipe copyright laws- 30% of the ingredients have to change? Think, kiddies.

i have no problem with removing recipes on request by those who created them, and i understand their instinct to protect what they've created. i'm simply slightly pissed off due to the tone of joanne's email. i don't like being threatened with unfounded legal action if i don't pull down the site. or being told i need to tell off everyone in alt.food.vegan for posting copyrighted recipes. yes, i got annoyed! :oP ... i suppose i was simply comparing the methods of the two authors in claiming their recipes. and i'm sure you could tell which one i preferred.

the end.

I think "Cheese Please" is wrong about copyright laws. You can't copyright a list of ingredients--it's the unique instructions that are copyrightable. That's why it's difficult to copyright recipes. I have no problem with someone wanting credit for her work; I'm constantly finding recipes that I wrote posted on the internet with no credit to me, and if I were basing my livelyhood on those recipes I'd probably be annoyed. But I do think there's a polite way of doing things, and J.S. can appear hostile and rude. Besides, I've never really liked her recipes--way too oily! ;-)
