Another addition to the plain tortilla is to add to the masa: cilantro vegan cheese corn etc.
You can mix the masa with anything and have a yummy torilla. I agree that I like my tortillas thicker than the traditional store bought mexican ones. I'm Guatemalan and there we make them thick and not too big. we eat them with refried black beans.
The method described is the best because is mess free, your hands don't get full of dough...also to test is hot enough, splash a few drops of water on the pan and if it sizzles it ready.
